AuGres Offers Everything From Harbor Town To Saginaw Bay

The City of AuGres has been undergoing a very quiet and purposeful transition over the last ten years and it is beginning to show. AuGres is a small town with a riverfront downtown nestled in a beautiful, natural setting. It is located on Saginaw Bay and is part of the undiscovered region known as Michigan’s Sunrise Side.

AuGres offers a four season playground geared to family outings and adventures. Whether you are here in the summer to enjoy our beaches, rivers and bay or a visitor during the winter months, you will find a great deal of activity. Here you can spend an enjoyable day with your family where downtown is a million mind miles away from home.

AuGres very fortunate to have a growing number of specialty retail businesses and quality food establishments that are important to vacationers. From the unique shopping experience at Treasures Forever, located just south of the city, to an enjoyable dinner at Dunleavy’s Eatery and Pub or H&H Bakery and Restaurant, to name a few, you will find that they are ready to meet or exceed your expectations.

Streetscape improvements, harbor development and other amenities have transformed AuGres from a community to drive through to a place to drive to. Here you will find a downtown that draws customers with its natural beauty, great shops and restaurants, budding arts and crafts venues, and small town friendliness.

There are a number of reasons to spend some time during your vacation in AuGres. As you travel along the U.S.-23 Sunrise Side Coastal Highway you will find a number of quaint small towns.

AuGres is one of the first small communities that you will come to along the route heading north. Here you will find a nice mixture of summer residents, mixed with the permanent population. You will find a unique mixture of people here during the season including those interested in heritage, ecotourism, agritourism, sportfishing and more.

AuGres is the perfect launching site for access to Saginaw Bay, Charity Island and the great walleye fishery that these waters hold. Here you will also find the AuGres Mooring Facility, DNR State Boat Launch, the AuGres Riverfront Park and the pedestrian bridge over the AuGres River.

If family fun is on the agenda, you will find a great time at the AuGres Water Funland facility located on U.S.-23 and a short walk from the Arenac County Historical Museum.

During the year, the community hosts a wide variety of special events that are fun for the entire family. The AuGres Car Cruise and Show, Walleye Tournaments, Craft Shows, Halloween Hollow and Christmas Parade are a few of the activities that take place on an annual basis in the community.

A new event planned for this year is a summer pirate festival. The inaugural event will take place on Saturday, August 4. The AuGres Pirates Festival is worth adding it to your summer plans.

The Arenac County Public Beach is located nearby. Huron Breeze Golf and Country Club and Pine River Golf Course are two very good golf courses that are located a few short minutes drive from downtown. These golf courses feature 18 holes with water hazards, sand traps and other challenges that make them worth the visit. Another unique golf venue is Knoll-view Golf Course, an 18-hole layout built on a former gravel pit just south of AuGres. A variety of golf packages are available from the Best Value Harbor Inn to the Econolodge.

As part of the designated Sunrise Side Coastal Highway, AuGres has a reputation for being convenient, safe and friendly. In addition, AuGres’ downtown is undergoing constant improvements and enhancements. The Sunrise Side Coastal Highway is designated as a scenic, historic and recreational route, which brings the area additional recognition, publicity and visitors.

Today, the AuGres River and Saginaw Bay have earned a reputation as a fisherman’s paradise. There are a number of annual fishing tournaments hosted in the AuGres area for both walleye and bass. Access to the river and Saginaw Bay is provided by a state-owned, city operated launch facility at the river mouth.

Charity Island lies six miles east of Point Lookout in Saginaw Bay, and was first written about in 1629. It has Arenac County’s only lighthouse, built in 1857, and commemorated by President Abraham Lincoln. The island served as a base for a commercial fishing venture in the 1920s. Today dinner cruises to the island have become very popular. Charity Island Transportation provides ferry service to the island and lighthouse.
