Winter Here we do winter right with lots of white, fluffy snow and clear blue skies. If it’s the crisp winter air you love, Cheboygan offers over 500 miles of groomed snowmobile trails for hours of winter adventure. Cross-country skiing trails are also plentiful, with a series of begin-in intermediate and advanced trails at Black Mountain Recreation Center. For those who prefer downhill skiing, two outstanding ski resorts are 45 minutes away. Our indoor ice rink offers men’s, women’s and children’s hockey. Locker rooms, concessions and skate rental are available. If you are in Cheboygan for the holidays, you are in for a real treat. Special activities surround the Christmas season include the famous Christmas Parade of Lights, Community Caroling and Retail Open House. Spring Spring in Cheboygan offers many unique recreational choices. Fishermen come to the area in search of their prize catch. With 50,000 acres of lakes and 80 miles of rivers and streams, there are plenty of places to land a perch, walleye, trout, salmon or bass. The woods surrounding Cheboygan come alive in springtime! Venture out in search of delicious morels during our “Celebrate Spring and Mushroom Hunt and Sturgeon Guided Tours” event, held the third Saturday in May. While in search of morels, you discover the elegant trilliums along the countryside. Keep your eyes open for glimpses of wandering wildlife, too. Summer One of the area’s highlights is the Inland Waterway. This unique waterway system connects Lake Huron with 38.2 miles of inland lakes and rivers. The waterway begins at Crooked Lake and travels through Indian River and Cheboygan. Two of Michigan’s largest inland lakes, Mullett and Burt, are part of the chain. Both bodies of water are perfect for swimming, water skiing, jet skiing, or fishing. Miles of public shoreline, including Aloha and Burt Lake State Parks provide for more recreational opportunities. Amenities along the route are plentiful. Shopping is within walking distance of the river. Restaurants offer first-rate food and accommodations along the way offer a convenient and pleasurable experience. Several full service marinas are easily accessible, as are public boat launches. Boaters can enjoy a journey to historic Mackinac Island, 15 minutes away, or explore Les Cheneaux Islands, North Channel or Boise Blanc Island. Fall You won’t find many places where fall colors are as spectacular as they are in northeast Michigan. Cheboygan has its share of winding country roads that offer miles of blazing color and an excellent AutumnFest Fall Color tour and map for automobiles and bicycles covering 25, 50 and 100 mile color tours. To celebrate fall, Cheboygan hosts Autumnfest during the first weekend in October. This fun-filled event features a craft show, apple/pumpkin bake-off, scarecrow building contest, food court and many other local events. Hunting enthusiasts love the fall for the wild array of game in season. Whatever season you choose, Cheboygan is the place for year-round activities, from concerts in the park to old-fashioned county fair. You can tour the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw, the largest Great Lakes Icebreaker. Visit Cheboygan’s Historical Museum, which presents a journey through time. Housed in the old county jail, the museum features vignettes of days gone bye. Cheboygan’s Opera House plays host to lecture series, stage plays, symphony orchestras and more.
