Kirtland’s Warbler Tops List of Nature’s Wonders

Tucked away in the heart of the AuSable River Valley is Oscoda County. It has one of the most valuable jack pine ecosystems in the nation, and it is a home to many forms of unique wildlife and plant life. Kirtland’s Warblers, American Bald Eagles, bluebirds, loons, wood turtles, Great Trilliums, secretive locusts, Hill’s Thistle, rough fescue, and Houghton’s Goldenrod are only a few of the endangered species found here.

Oscoda County’s main attraction is the world famous AuSable River. Canoeing, hiking, fishing, morel picking, bird watching or fossil collecting will keep every member of any family entertained for days.

A popular attraction in Oscoda County is Michigan’s largest community of Amish and Mennonites, located between
Mio and Fairview. As you drive through this area notice horse and buggies, unique clothing, solid architecture
and beautiful crafts and gardens.

There is an Amish store on Kittle Road where many go to browse, and enjoy buying bulk products from this little country store with skylights instead of electricity. You might also enjoy one of the many bawith goodies, the fabric shop, greenhouse, harness shop or a stop at a field to watch a community work together in weeding the garden on a warm evening.

The Mio Iris Show, held each year in June, is the world’s oldest consecutive AIS approved show in the world, founded in 1942 by the Mio Irisarian Society.

In addition to the AuSable River, Oscoda County has lots of recreational activities, including golf, snowmobiling, and excellent hunting and fishing.

Golf courses in Comins, Fairview and Garland provide plenty of recreation for avid golfer.

Some of the best fly-fishing for trout in the world can be found between Mio and Glennie along the AuSable River. Public access to these sites are readily available. Float fishing along the river is also a popular activity.

The annual Relief Auction held at the Oscoda County Fairgrounds each August provides bidders with the opportunity to acquire
some of the finest handmade quilts in the world. The fairgrounds is also home to the annual Forestry Expo each July.
